EUGENE, Ore. -- When the Oregon Ducks look back at their lone loss of the season, sure theres lingering disappointment, but not a lot of second-guessing. Instead, some players have pointed to the Arizona loss as the turning point of their season, when they woke up and revived for their march to the national championship. I think we learned a lot in terms of having that loss early in the year and kind of experiencing failure a little bit, quarterback Marcus Mariota said a few games afterward. Now that we have had our backs against the wall, guys feel the need to fight, play loose and play with high intensity. Lesson learned, Oregon will play for the national title next Monday night against Ohio State in Arlington, Texas. The second-seeded Ducks (13-1) defeated Florida State in college footballs first playoffs to advance, while the fourth-seeded Buckeyes (13-1) upset Alabama. Back in early October, Oregon was undefeated and ranked second in The Associated Press poll. The Ducks were boosted by a key victory earlier in the season over Michigan State and looking to avoid the pitfalls that had thwarted them the season before, when late-season losses against Arizona and Stanford took them out of a BCS bowl game for the first time since 2008. The Wildcats were also undefeated, but unranked and 24-point underdogs. And the game was at Autzen Stadium, where the Ducks hadnt lost since 2012. Oregon led 7-3 at halftime before Arizona freshman Nick Wilson ran for a pair of touchdowns and caught another to build a 24-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Ducks rallied with a field goal and Mariotas touchdown pass to Keanon Lowe to tie the game with 8:21 left. With Arizona driving downfield, Tony Washington was called for unsportsmanlike conduct to give the Wildcats a first down. Then a pass interference call paved the way for Terris Jones-Grigsbys go-ahead 1-yard touchdown. On Oregons ensuing series, Mariota was sacked and stripped of the ball by Scooby Wright, giving the Wildcats the 31-24 win. Afterward, senior cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, who decided to stay at Oregon for a final year in part to give a national championship one more shot, was the voice of reason. Every loss is a test of our character to see how we respond. Not every team in college football is going to go undefeated so everyone has to learn from their losses and get better, he said. There was talk that Mariota hadnt been 100 per cent in the loss, which he shrugged off as typical football stuff. In the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks typical even-keel style, a week afterward he -- and the rest of the Ducks -- had refocused. Theres no sense of panic or anything like that, Mariota said at the time. I think guys are understanding weve just got to take it one game at a time. Taking that cue from their unquestioned leader, it was a sentiment the Ducks carried through the rest of the season. The loss was a big part of it. Thats not something that we do, so we just reassessed everything, went back to the drawing boards and came back more physical. We were able to bounce back and knew we had to play more physical and play a lot harder than we have been, running back Byron Marshall said. On Monday, the Ducks held a media day back home in Eugene, where theyll practice before heading to the Dallas area on Friday in preparation for the title game. Coach Mark Helfrich was asked about the Arizona loss, and how the Ducks overcame that disappointment. He chalked it up to the process. We believe very much in what were doing. Our guys believe very much in what were doing and how were doing it, Helfrich said. Theres always -- from the medias perspective or the fans perspective -- second-guessing. In our world thats evaluation. You go back and evaluate why something happened. And you fix it. Atlanta Braves Jerseys . Still, Encarnacion felt a sense of relief. He felt a pop just before crumpling to the ground after running out a groundball in the first inning of Saturdays game. It could have been worse. “Its going to take maybe two weeks,” said Encarnacion. “It depends how Im going to be and how Im going to be day after day, feeling better or not. R.A. Dickey Jersey . Authorities in Medina, Minn., released the details one day after Cunningham was jailed for another alleged incident with the woman he had been living with for the previous eight months. Cunningham had already been charged with felony domestic assault for allegedly choking the woman last week. Although Olivetti, a qualifier, had 13 aces, he failed to force a single break-point chance on Gasquets serve and lost his own three times. Gasquet next plays third-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, who won had 18 aces in a 6-2, 6-4 win against seventh-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France. ST. LOUIS -- The New Orleans Saints looked like a team playing out the string. And, although the St. Louis Rams are out of contention yet again, theyre not going quietly. Drew Brees threw interceptions that led to touchdowns on the Saints first two possessions and the Rams got big days from Zac Stacy, Robert Quinn and on special teams in a 27-16 victory Sunday. Quinn had two sacks, giving him an NFC-leading 15, for a pass rush that took the heat off a young secondary. His quarterback hit on the Saints first snap of the game altered the flight of the ball on T.J. McDonalds interception. The Saints (10-4) missed their first chance to clinch a playoff berth, trailing 24-3 at the half, but made it look respectable with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Theyre unbeaten at home, but just 3-4 on the road and play at Carolina with the NFC South lead on the line next week. Kellen Clemens threw for two TDs in the first quarter, matching his best performance in seven games as the fill-in starter for Sam Bradford. The Rams (6-8) recovered an onside kick to set up a field goal in the first quarter, and Michael Brockers blocked a field-goal attempt at the end of the half. Brees was 39 for 56 for 393 yards, but with just one touchdown. The Rams played one of their strongest games of the year a week after getting eliminated, and the franchise is assured of a 10th consecutive season without a winning record. St. Louis offence had a nice day against Saints defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan, who had an extended interview with the Rams in January before joining New Orleans. The Rams have upset the Saints in the last two meetings in St. Louis. They were 2-14 in 2011, but one of the victories came against New Orleans, which totalled 13 wins that year. Stacy shook off an early injury scare and set a franchise rookie record with 106 yards by halftime, bettering the likes of Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, Steven Jackson and Jerome Bettis.dddddddddddd Stacy finished with 132 yards on 27 carries. Brees scored on a 1-yard sneak early in the fourth quarter and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston with 3:07 to go. The Saints recovered an onside kick, but their comeback ended when Garrett Hartley was wide left on a 26-yard field-goal attempt. Last week, Brees became the fastest in NFL history to 50,000 yards passing while throwing for four TDs in a 31-13 victory over Carolina at home. Brees was intercepted twice in the first quarter for the first time in a decade, putting the Rams in prime scoring position on the first and killing a drive on the second. The Saints trailed 17-0 early in the second quarter, unable to overcome Brees misfires. Quinn had perhaps his best game of the year. On his second sack, he stripped Brees and then recovered the fumble in the third quarter to help keep the Saints down. Cory Harkey broke three tackles on a 31-yard touchdown catch the first play -- just his seventh reception of the year after Brees first interception. Brees floated a rollout aimed at Jimmy Graham, who was in triple-coverage, and Trumaine Johnson snared another underthrown pass at the goal line. The Rams drove 93 yards, helped by a pair of personal penalties, and made it 14-0 on Clemens 4-yard pass to a wide-open Lance Kendricks. The Rams followed up with perfect execution on an onside kick by kicker Greg Zuerlein recovered in the air by a leaping Stedman Bailey, setting up a field goal for a 17-0 cushion early in the second quarter. Clemens got a chance to use the victory formation the Rams practice after Brockers blocked Hartleys 36-yard field-goal attempt with 2 seconds left.
