PIRAEUS, Greece -- Manchester Uniteds troubled season took another turn for the worse on Tuesday as David Moyes side slumped to a 2-0 first leg defeat to Olympiakos in the last 16 of the Champions League. Moyes described the match as "the worst performance in Europe" hed seen from his players, and took full responsibility for the result. Argentine striker Alejandro Dominguez broke the deadlock at Karaiskaki Stadium when he got his foot to a shot from Yiannis Maniatis in the 38th minute and turned the ball past goalkeeper David de Gea. First-half composure from the visitors soon turned to complacency after the break when striker Joel Campbell, on loan from Uniteds Premier League rival Arsenal, caught De Gea off guard with a well-placed shot in the 55th minute. Wayne Rooney produced no threat up front and strike partner Robin van Persie missed the visitors only clear chance -- a shot over the crossbar in the 82nd minute -- as United slipped to its first defeat in the Champions League this season. "It was a very poor performance, and we didnt deserve to get anything. To a man there was nothing," Moyes said. "Im just surprised. I just didnt see that level of performance coming. We didnt offer enough on the night to create any goals." Olympiakos coach Michel Gonzalez played down the implications of the result, saying that 2-0 wasnt a big enough margin to give an advantage in terms of qualifying. "I will never say anything bad about Manchester United, because I have such great respect for them. The players know that we still have more to do," Gonzalez said. "But I cant hide it. I am very happy. Its the players Im so proud of ... to get this result against a team of this calibre." Runaway leaders in the Greek league, Olympiakos fielded its untested strikers after the sale last month of Kostas Mitroglou. But the hosts threatened early with Dominguez nearly grabbing a goal in the eighth minute, stopped only by a last-ditch tackle from Nemanja Vidic. Moyes brought on Danny Wellbeck and Shinji Kagawa in the second half but they made little impact, while Olympiakos nearly made it 3-0 in 67th but Michael Olaitan failed to finish. Despite the defeat, United midfielder Michael Carrick insisted that the three-time European champions could turn the result around in the second leg on March 19 at Old Trafford. "We just havent been getting the right results," Carrick said. "As players we have to stand up ... thats the business were in." Premier League champions last season under Alex Ferguson, United is currently sixth in the domestic standings -- 15 points adrift of leader Chelsea. It also made an early exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Swansea. Jakub Vrana Jersey . Bobrovsky posted a 2-0-1 record with a 1.58 goals-against average and .950 save percentage to help the Blue Jackets (35-26-6) gain five of a possible six points last week. He capped the week by making 32 saves and stopping 2-of-4 shootout attempts in a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. Cheap Capitals Jerseys . The weekend at Oriole Park has been less kind, with three players suffering varying degrees of injury. The worst ailment of the three, at least optically, is the deep bone bruise suffered by Adam Lind when he fouled a pitch off the top of his right foot in the sixth inning of Saturdays game. http://www.capitalsauthority.com/authentic-dmitry-orlov-capitals-jersey/ . Langer appeared to be in trouble when his second shot on the par-5 18th ended up in the rough short of the green. He hit a brilliant pitch to 5 feet and made the putt after Slumans birdie attempt rolled just wide. Jay Beagle Jersey . The judge sternly instructed the prosecutor to restrain himself and he apologized -- then went right back to trying to pick holes in the testimony of the double-amputee runner. It was a harsh day of cross-examination for Pistorius, challenged relentlessly about his account of the moments just before he killed Reeva Steenkamp, as well as circumstances related to several firearms charges against him, including the firing of a gun in a crowded restaurant. Dennis Maruk Jersey . Price also posted the longest shutout sequence since 1960 at 164:19 minutes. He stopped a combined 55 shots in Canadas final two games and 70 of 71 shots in Canadas three elimination games, allowing only a breakaway goal to Lauris Darzins of Latvia. For his efforts, Price was named best goalkeeper by the tournament directorate. Prices outstanding play is marred only by the extremely strong defensive play of Canadas top six defencemen; Shea Weber, Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester. ATLANTA -- Jeff Locke attempted to shrug off an ugly loss as "just another game that didnt go your way." With the Pirates in a tight division race, however, it was much more. Locke gave up six runs in only four innings and the Pirates missed a chance to move up in the NL Central race, falling to the Atlanta Braves 6-2 on Wednesday night. It marked the second time in five September starts Locke (7-6) failed to last longer than four innings. He allowed 13 baserunners -- eight hits and five walks -- in the short start. Locke said he struggled "pretty much the whole game, really." Manager Clint Hurdle said Lockes pitches were "up in the zone" and he lacked consistency with his fastball and secondary pitches. "So it was tough for him out there," Hurdle said. The Pirates, who clinched a playoff spot on Tuesday night, stayed 1 1/2 games behind division-leading St. Louis, which was beaten by the Cubs. Pittsburgh lost for only the fourth time in its last 19 games. Hurdle wouldnt say if the start could affect Lockes role in the playoffs. "You know what, were not even there," Hurdle said. "Well have those conversations when we need to. Thats not a question Im going to answer tonight. When we sit down, well look at the volume of work and well look at matchups." Andrew McCutchen had two hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning after Atlanta led 6-0. The Pirates had two baserunners in the ninth before Braves closer Craig Kimbrel struck out McCutchen and Travis Snider for his 45th save. "We still battled," McCutchen said. "We still fought at the end." Pittsburgh catcher Russell Martin left the game in the fifth inning with tightness in his left hamstring. "I didnt tweak it; its just tight," Martin said, adding it was "a smart and cautious decision" to leave the game and guard against a more serious hamstring injury. Justin Upton hit a two-run homer and pitcher Julio Teheran and Emilio Bonifacio each had two-run singles as Atlanta ended a five-game losing streak. Teheran (14-13) allowed six hits and two runs in five innings. The Braves improved their dismal September record to 5-16. Their six runs matched their combined output in the five straight losses. Pittsburgh lost a day after its clubhouse ccelebration at Turner Field, where champagne and beer flowed freely.dddddddddddd The Pirates wrapped up their post-season berth exactly one year after clinching a place in the 2013 playoffs to end a 21-year drought. McCutchen drove in Starling Marte, who had two hits, with his 25th homer. Christian Bethancourt hit two ground-rule doubles for Atlanta. UP, UP AND AWAY Upton set a career high with his 28th homer. He has 99 RBIs, also a career high, and has been a highlight of a bad season for Atlanta hitters. GOOD FRIENDS Locke and Atlantas Jason Heyward lived together when the two were beginning their professional careers at Danville in the Braves farm system. Locke said he and Heyward remain good friends and talk or text regularly. Heyward had no hits in three at-bats against Locke. ADDITION The Pirates claimed right-hander Chaz Roe off waivers from the New York Yankees. Roe had been designated for assignment by the Yankees on Sunday. The 27-year-old Roe began the season with the Marlins before being acquired by the Yankees on August 31. He made three appearances with New York this season, and also posted 14 saves in 47 games (64.0ip) at Triple-A New Orleans. Roe will take the roster spot of right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton, who was placed on the 60-day D.L. with right hip inflammation. TRAINERS ROOM Pirates: Martin singled in the second inning and seemed to hurt himself when he returned to first base on a pickoff throw. He remained on one knee for several seconds before rising slowly and said after the game "it looked funny" because his foot slipped off the bag. Braves: 3B Chris Johnson had two hits and scored two runs before he left the game in the sixth with a lower back strain. ... C Evan Gattis is expected to make his first start since Sept. 7 on Thursday night but likely wont play the full game. He has been held out with strep throat and a kidney stone. UP NEXT Pirates: Edinson Volquez (12-7) will start on Thursday night in the final game of the four-game series. He hasnt faced the Braves this season and is 2-3 against Atlanta in six career starts. Braves: RHP David Hale, replacing Mike Minor in the rotation, will make his first start since June 28 in the Braves final home game of the season. Hale (4-4) has pitched in relief in 39 of his 44 games.
